Holy Mormon Empire Part 1 - The Legions and Temple Guard
Shown here painted but with unfinished bases.
The Mormon Legions are the elite standing army of the Holy Mormon Empire. Meticulously drilled and rigidly trained they march in perfect order across the battlefield, every hundred men commanded by a Centurion they are a force to be reckoned with. Each Century of Legionaries carries their own flag as well as the national flag of the HME, but with red stripes instead of white. This is not only to match their scarlet uniforms but to honour the blood shed during the first Utah War.
The Legions do not use artillery or cavalry and instead rely on Militias and Indian Axillaries to provide them with this support. Many Centurions in the legions are ex-Temple Guard linemen.
The Mormon Temple guard are the most elite infantry in the HME, and arguably on the entire continent. They wear sacred uniforms of white linen and carry the flag of the church instead of the HME national flag, symbolising their absolute loyalty to the LDS cause. Whilst the legionaries number in their thousands, the Temple guard are only 300, although only a third of their number are ever allowed to leave Salt Lake City and when they do it is in the direst of circumstances. Being in the temple guard is a great honour but it is not intended for life. Their rigorous drilling and constant readiness for battle means the toll such a lifestyle can take on one can be serious. Therefore most Temple guardians only serve for 3 years of active duty before they either become centurions in command of a Century of Legionaries or go on to found one of the numerous militias that make up the bulk of the HME's fighting capability. Indeed having a Letter of Honour signed by the Emperor is a requirement to found a legal militia and serving in the Temple Guard is the only guaranteed way of getting one. However there are others who have received these letters for showing outstanding loyalty or prowess in battle. This system ensures that militias, although independent and free enough to organise themselves how they like, will always be loyal to the cause of the Holy Mormon Empire.

I love the idea and look forward to more accounts. Why, though, would they forgo cavalry and cannons?
ReplyDeleteThey are based off the Roman legions, who usually relied on cavalry and archers from Auxiliaries or allied tribes.
